There are endless possibilities for positive uses of such an ability.
If you drop something fragile, for example, you could use such an ability to slow its descent so that it lands softly and doesn't break.
You could "will" your car's tire to seal itself after a puncture and avoid the hassles of a flat.
You could "float" something down from a high shelf so you wouldn't have to climb up after it.
If you could manipulate the tumblers in a lock, you would never have to worry about locking yourself out of your apartment or locking your keys in the car.
You could instantly stop that paper grocery bag from tearing and spilling your canned goods all over the driveway or porch as you are carrying it in from the car.
Mentally clean up that awful mess when a ballpoint pen leaks in your shirt pocket (guys) or purse (gals).
Here's where the moral and ethical values come in, though:
Our bodies and the bodies of all other living creatures are composed of matter and would also, therefore, be subject to control with such an ability.
You could heal injuries, cure cancer, lose or gain weight, banish wrinkles and grey hair, eradicate cavities without ever seeing a dentist, maintain 20-20 vision without glasses, contacts or laser surgery etc.
AND, you could do these same things for others, too.
You could keep the fleas off your pet(s), keep the flies, mosquitoes, roaches, ants and other biological pests out of your living space.
If you actually HAVE this ability, then its uses are limited only by your imagination and the degree to which you are able to use it.
Horefully, though, there would also be some self-limitation posed by common sense, ethics and thoughtfullness towards others.
well.... say you were asked to stand on a 3 inch by 3 inch wooden block barefoot for 6 hours. That would be very uncomfortable and painful, but by using mind over matter, you can take yourself to a different place mentally to avoid thinking of the pain and discomfort that you are feeling at the moment. Or like on the show survivor when they have to eat those weird bugs/organs..... if you tell yourself that the cockroach you are about to eat is actually a dorito, then it will make it easier to eat. See what I'm saying?

By not letting things get to you. Using your mind to think positively is the most basic way I can sum it up.
