Way back in the beginning, Yahweh shared creation with Wisdom (Sophia), the feminine principle (see Proverbs 8). Then Yahweh had a consort, Asherah, for a long time when the Hebrews and Canaanites shared the same territory. It was only after the return from the Babylonian Captivity that Yahweh became the all-masculine one true "god" and the feminine principle was lost.
Although the Protestants claim that Catholics "worship" Mary, the fact is that they see her as the mother/feminine figure that intercedes with "god" on behalf of those that call on her. OK, so you can pray directly to "god", but the idea of a benevolent feminine principle has been missing from Christianity otherwise and the Protestants again go to the sexist/patriarchal image of "god". Problem with that is that you get a "god" of much judgment but little mercy.
In Buddhism, which is very largely masculine, they do have Kuan Yin, who is the Goddess of Mercy. Christianity needs a goddess of mercy in their own right and Mary is that "goddess", the feminine principle of "god".
Remember Genesis 1:26-27 "God" created mankind in "our image and likeness. Male AND female created "god" them". Clearly, the "image and likeness" of "god" does include the male AND female principles. And this was true from Day One, something that both the Jews and the Protestants seem to ignore.
I'm not Catholic, in fact I'm agnostic. But I realize that IF any "god" does exist, they WILL encompass the masculine AND feminine principle. You cannot have a God of LOVE and ignore half of what makes us human.

Mary is and was only a woman.
Mary shows that even if you're good, God will still f*ck you.
