I have been looking for quite awhile, and this is the only question of which I do not know. I've tried Google, Google Scholar, my Junior College Database, and my high-school database.

It's a psychological truth that being perceived by others doing "in" things has always been a main confirmation and enhancement of one's existence and social standing, as expressed in the line from MY FAIR LADY at the Ascot races, "Everyone who's anyone is here." It's just that this period in French culture became particularly known for this social phenomenon.
