I only have experience with Character Driven material.,and not with Plot/Action driven.
Since character/story take a backseat in these shows, Is most of the writers time spent researching Law/Crime labs for the twist endings?
Do you basically need to be an expert in Crime labs/Law to write for todays shows?

Only if you write recycled crap from past episodes of just as terrible shows.
Get off the CSI, NCIS garbage. As the son of a cop and the husband of a lawyer I can tell you that DNA evidence, finger prints, and the like, while seemingly convincing to Juries, more often then Not bear no real evidence. As they are easily explained. For instance, 9 out of 10 murders are done by someone the victim knows. If you know a person, and are friends/lovers/relatives of them, you're DNA and fingerprints are going to be all over their Apt/home.
Very little research, just pulling bits from old episodes and putting tiny tweaks on the plot.
Suggested viewing, with good character development, instead of this dab nonsense: Arrested Development, Twin Peaks, Battlestar Galactica, Firefly, the first 5 seasons of Lost, Jericho, etc. The last one the acting is terrible, beyond bad, but the character development and story arch is great.
Sorry if I was harsh, but I would rather watch Keeping up with the Kardashians then one of those CSI, whodunits.
BTW, all the shows I mentioned above are on Netflix streaming if you got it.
