The statement “Many atheists became believers” is true because EVERYONE is born an atheist. Afterward man made doctrines like the Bible begin influencing people. They become indoctrinated and often become believers. You're appealing to populous(logical fallacy), which is making absolutely no argument for your god. Instead it leads towards the fact that you can not make a logical argument for your god character.
Seriously, what's your response when someone tells you that many Christians became atheists? You'd probably say they were never really Christians in the first place, right? I don't think you'd consider that a reason to change your mind.
Logical answer: Save myself from what. I live as a good person. I do my best to look after the people I care about and I enjoy life. There is nothing to save myself from. If your God exists then he will respect the fact that I have always done my best for others and this was without fear of eternal damnation if I didn't.
Illogical answer: Sorry mate I popped that cherry long ago.
Since I am a former atheist I hope you don't mind my answering this.
In my experience, actual former atheists are quite rare. Many former "atheists," especially ones that are now Christian tend to equate an earlier time in their life when they did not actually care about any deity with being an atheist.
Atheism, even as a default state, requires HAVING AN OPINION about the existence of god(s).
People who lack an opinion about the existence of any deity aren't atheists.
The vast majority of "ex-atheists" I have met are actually people who went from lacking an opinion as to the existence of any god to believing in a god, usually as a result of having difficulty in their lifes. I don't consider those people to have ever been atheists as most of them say things like "I was down on my luck and then I prayed..."
...When I was an atheist, I wouldn't have prayed, even when down on my luck.....It would never have crossed my mind.
I would say to them, good for you and I hope your life is all that you want it to be. I'll stay an Atheist, my path has led me here and I have not looked back since I was 17. I enjoy being a non believer.
um. thats not true anyways. there is an uprise in atheists. atheists are winning. we have proof. u have a book that could of been written by some hobo looking for attetion.
and why save myself to go to some crouded place filled with complete strangers. whats wrong with you people?

I would have to wonder where they got their statistics, because Christianity is sinking like a ship with a hole.
More people are becoming atheist/agnostic then ever before.
Many Germans in the 1930's joined the Nazi party.
Many 19th century Americans participated in the genocide of the American Indian.
Many 1840's southerners owned slaves.
Many low income women in the city of Detroit smoke crack.
Many lemmings will follow a single lemming off a cliff.
Just because everbody's doing it, doesn't mean it's a good idea.

My response would be, "So what?"

I've seen claims like that before using a very obvious propaganda-type link
many Christians say many things that aren't true.
I am not interested in christian bigotry

Many believers became atheists. That seems to be the prevalent direction.
