Used to be, not long ago, religious scholars sought deeper meaning in the bible. Now they no longer want to think deeply. It's easier to just take it as literal.
I know what they think when they claim the Big Bang is an atheistic theory and I bring his name up. They don't tend to like it. Then again, he was a Roman Catholic priest and I have yet to meet a Roman Catholic in real life who is a Young Earth Creationist. Most YECs are also confused on the fact that Catholicism is a Christian denomination.

Monsignor Georges Henri Joseph Ãdouard Lemaître (July 17, 1894 – June 20, 1966) was a Belgian Roman Catholic priest, honorary prelate, professor of physics and astronomer at the Catholic University of Leuven. He sometimes used the title Abbé or Monseigneur.
Lemaître proposed what became known as the Big Bang theory of the origin of the Universe, which he called his 'hypothesis of the primeval atom'.
