Things were going along as they did in the 50s but tv was more influential. It was influential in a few ways.
Music was a mixed bag with a couple stations playing swing and polkas and a couple playing gospel and blues while rock and roll was going strong...hard rock, psychedelic rock, folk rock, hill billy rock, Detroit rock, Philadelphia rock, and even some home grown Chicago rockers.
TV brought us the news. People became news junkies...men walking on the Moon, Political assassinations, the never ending war in Vietnam, racial turmoil, the Beatles, Mayor Daley never ending terms, political unrest in :incoln and Grant Parks while the poilice bash in heads while theworld watches...on live tv.
Neighborhoods were burned down by the people who lived there, the el cost 15 cents, transfers were free but had to be punched, Riverview was next to Lane Tech, the Bears played in Wrigley Field, Gale Sayers and Dick Butkus were our heroes and our President said he wasn't a crook.
Mexican-Americans in Chicago were working in the factories, on the railroads, in stores. Those elsewhere were braceros in the fields , in the orchards and vineyards and truck farms. Everybody worked. The peso was worth 12 1/2 cents.
There was some political involvement on a couple university campi. Cesar Chavez had some influence on Chicagoans but not much until he was accepted by the AFL/CIO.
I've mentioned how some things were going. Chicago was in the iron fisted grasp of Mayor Daley's tight first. He was supreme ruler.
In Washington, Nixon was king but his throne was falling apart. Ralph Nadar started a campaign against a General Motors car...and won. GM was the biggest corporation...like WalMart is now...nobody won against GM. Raplh Nadar did. The border situation was not a situation. There were immigration laws with limits and deportations.
in the overdue 60's Chicago became the really city that had a superior, totally smart political gadget in operation. Mayor Daley became between the remarkable of the large political bosses. Chicago became 'the most segregated city in u . s . of america'. It became the region of the Democratic nationwide convention in 1968, the violence surrounding it became a lack of existence blow to the Democratic social gathering (the fractionilization recent in the prominent Democrats hails from this time) and helped pick Nixon. Graft and corruption became straightforward and tolerated to point. international wide, toddlers were talking out hostile to oppressive regimes and unpopular authorities movements. there became Prague Spring, the Paris student Riots, the Tet Offensive. I even do no longer recognize what the function of Mexican-individuals in Chicago or the US were at the moment.
