Aristotle said that men are rational, women are not. Do you agree? Are women still often thought of as “too emotional”? Are emotions in men considered a sign of weakness?
Women are rational, but sometimes our rationality and logic gets overshadowed by our emotions. Men sometimes have that problem too but the overshadowing emotion is more often rage LOL. Women are often considered too emotional even today. That's because we are more emotional than men by and large. It isn't a bad thing; we're just different. We handle and express our feelings differently than men do. I think men feel as deeply and are just as capable of getting frustrated or hurt or touched, but they handle it differently and don't always show it as willingly as women do.
Some consider emotions in men to be weak. I think being emotional is only a weakness when a person allows their emotions to have the driver's seat in their life: they make decisions based on how they "feel", they are always focused on how they feel and expressing it, they get hurt or offended very easily and it's a big deal, etc. That is weakness in my opinion. Emotions are wonderful, and they have their place, but they are something we need to control rather than letting them control us.
So did Locke but we're talking a long time ago and an view of women in the western culture. Women are not "too emotional" although there certainly are some women who are. But as a whole, it fluctuates. I also don't see expressing emotion as a weakness. Being controlled by emotion, or being a slave to emotion, however, is another story but men can be caught up in this too. Men have been said in the past that they are prone to "rage" or "jealously" or "possessiveness." This can be seen quite often as Aristotle and other philosophers warn against such a state in men. Aristotle, for example, tried to teach moderation in all things. Yet these are also emotions, though why they are often not viewed as such is beyond me.
Men had to be taught to be rational (that was the entire point of philosophers). Even Aristotle pointed out that if one didn't receive a certain training from a youth he would not likely ever be a wise, moderate man. The problem was that women were not encouraged to take part in philosophy (although there were a few) and moderation was not targeted towards them.
In this day in age, however, where rational thought is valued in both genders, women have proven that they can be just as rational as their counterpart and men have proven that some of them can be just as emotional as women. It's really not a gender thing as much as a learned thing. And one does have to keep in mind that women are encouraged by society to express emotion while men are discouraged. Not very fair but the whole "John Wayne" image is still expected of many men.
Men and Women are two different types of species. We act and think differently to certain things. Emotions are natural in both sexes and it's what starts from child birth. The bonding from the child's mother begins when the baby is hungry and cries for that need. Babies also laugh and get angry. We human beings have that already in ourselves even when in the mother's womb. I was told to sing or listen to music when I am sad or angry as this calms the baby. Sad movies and even one that inspires people will make a man cry. If you understand what love and hurt can do to you it's almost like this painful feeling way inside a person. Some are good feelings and some are guilty or bad feelings. Without emotions in both men and women, our world would be a dull one. No world is a perfect one as no human is either. It's a good feeling and those emotions come through anxiety or even depression. Frankly, I believe that when a man cries he is only feeling one thing that many women will admire and that is that he is very strong and a patient man which is very rare in men. in then turns us We cry for Jesus, and that is what emotions come from not only from the outside but yes within. A powerful feeling indeed that is.
Well, it depends on who you are talking to. There are those who see women no more then baby making housewives. Then there are those who see them as equals. I personality am on neither side. I don't agree or disagree, there are men who are more rational then certain women and then there are women that are more rational then certain men. It really depends on which women and which men you are trying to compare in this kind of situation. And yes, even to this day there are men that think women get too emotional. This is another toss up. Not all women are "too emotional," it just depends on which person your talking about. Like Lisa would cry if she stubbed her toe while if Katie stubbed her toe she would just shrug it off. And finally for if emotions in men equals weak men, still, like I've said, depends on who's eyes your looking through. Some think a man that cries ever won't amount to anything in life. While others believe that if they show emotion they'll do better if then if they don't show emotion. Me personality, Men should show emotion, but while keeping in mind not to show too much. A man needs to be able to know what emotions to show where.
There is a serious lack of recognition of EMOTIONAL INTELLIGENCE.
Who says emotions aren't logical?
I don't buy that.
I think that a man who can show his feelings without apologizing for them, is 'stronger' as he is facing a society that frowns about using his inherent gift.
Without emotions we would be robotic.
How many 'technical' difficulties would we have without emotion?
Intuition is a great tool, as it calls upon a higher intelligence than simple weighing facts. Sometimes there is more to a situation than what is presented.
I think both men and woman are emotional and logical, it's just what society expects us to be and our minds have been genetically altered by how we use them.
BTW Aristotle was a fruit loop in many of his 'theories.' I think his claim that woman are 'too emotional' comes from a bias, bias is not logical, it is emotional reaction.
No, I don't agree. I have yet to see any sort of proof that women, as a whole, are less rational than men. But a lot of people like to keep perpetuating that idea.
Emotional men are largely targeted with epithets relating to the female anatomy. We've generally caught up to the idea of emotionally strong or even detached women, but not the opposite.
I believe that both men and women can be irrational at some points in their lives in reacting to some issues that present themselves. I feel that women can be more emotional at times however I have seen men being emotional at times as well, and it is not a sign of weakness.
Weakness and being emotional are not a sign of gender. No I do not agree. It is an individual set of traits not based on gender.
Within society, yes men who show emotion are often seen or viewed as weak. Do I agree with this, no not in my opinion. Men who are capable of showing emotion in my opinion are well rounded and human. Welcome to the human race.
Aristotle was wrong about 99 % of the time. He was just another conceited man who didn't didn't want to give women credit for having any intelligence. Men like that, dime a dozen.
