Why was it not recognized? Because until the civil rights movement there was no "black" history. Just like there was no female history. There was just history for white, rich, protestant males.
The reason is simple. People tend to be interested only in their own social group and history is always written by the winner. And the ultimate winner in western society have (until a generation) been only white, rich (in the US protestant) males.
