Without moral issues the Republicans could still be considered conservative because of their pro war, pro rich, anti social spending philosophy.
If you add the moral issues like their opposition to choice, marriage equality, school prayer, capital punishment etc, they are not only conservative but also theocratic and totalitarian , and that will be their undoing
Big spenders (to help the rich, natch) and budget unbalencers, Republicans can hardly call themselves conservatives. The only thing they want to conserve are tax breaks for the wealthy.

Only in comparison the the democrats.... I don't consider the republican party itself to be conservative. Yes, there are some republicans who are conservative.... but not too many.
