Why don´t football teams just forfeit the match when losing by 4 goals?
The rule says that when you forfeit the match you instantly lose the match with 3-0 margin. So, when you are 4 or 5 down why don´t you just forfeit the match and take an easier defeat?
- Remember last year when Arsenal were leading 4-0 against Newcastle. Newcastle did one of the greatest comebacks ever and made it 4-4.
- Also, for example, say Manchester United were winning 4-0 against Wigan. Then, Wigan forfeited to make the score 3-0. It could cost Manchester United 1 goal on goal difference and could lose them the title. So sometimes it isn't really fair on the winning team and the ref might not let it happen because of this.
- The people who came to watch the match would want a refund causing the forfeited team to be fined and a possible points deduction.
... but in a friendly this might be more likely to happen.
So, even though it might be in the rules to do so, the team forfeiting would lose much more than the would have if they didn't forfeit.
Associations can bend the rules. Plus you can't just say "ref we forfeit" without reason. Getting smashed is hardly considered a fair reason. What I think would happen is if you are 7-0 down and forfeit perhaps they would add the 3 goals onto that to make it a 10-0 loss.
Even in the relatively short era of the EPL, there have already been at least 2 football games where a team cam back from 4 goals behind... and also because such action is not within the spirtit of the game
and it is ALWAYS those games that go down as classic matches....these are the ones that in years to come are remembered as the "classic" i was there matches...
Finally that would not be allowed by either the FIFA or FA or any other bodies rules, and would incur severe reprecutions....but I believe the original reason, should be more relative to the players and the teams..

Gate money - the reason for a match in the first place.
Because there's a thing called pride?????
Because they would face sanctions and fines.
Because severe sanctions would follow.
