Why does ㄱ change to ㅇwhen followed by nasal sounds such as ㅁ,ㄴ in Korean?

For example in in 한국말 is pronounced as 항궁말. Ive often seen it romanized this way but I've never known why. Can anyone clarify? Although 한국 isn't followed by one of the nasal sounds, people seem to pronounce it as 한궁 rather than 한국.

Thanks!
