Why did American car companies apply major changes to their automobiles year after year in the 60’s?

It just seems to me that they kept offering bigger engines, promised more performance and had a new model every year up until the late 70’s. After looking at gas price historical data, I wouldn’t be surprised if they were shareholders in petroleum companies. If this is not at all related, why can’t car companies do the same now given we have better technology and are more efficient in the production process?
