The Kentucky Wildcats 1995-1996 team is definitely the greatest basketball team of all time. There are simple facts that show why:
• Used seven players in the championship game who later played in the NBA: Antoine Walker, Derek Anderson, Tony Delk, Ron Mercer, Walter McCarty, Mark Pope and Jeff Sheppard. The first five were first-round picks.
• Scored 535 points in six NCAA Tournament games -- tied for fourth-highest series total (with 1987 Indiana) in history; their
scoring margin of 21.5 points also ranks fourth.
• Were led by Delk, who tied an NCAA record with seven 3-pointers in the championship game and was named most outstanding player at the Final Four.
• Had a reputation as a pressing team, but applying vicious post traps against Wake Forest All-American center Tim Duncan in the Midwest Region championship limited him to 2-of-7 shooting, 14 points and five turnovers in an 83-63 Wildcats win.
• Were so gifted they earned the nickname “the Untouchables ” from coach Rick Pitino, who used 10 players extensively.
The Fab Five was the nickname for a 1991 University of Michigan men's basketball team recruitment class that is considered by some to be "the greatest class ever recruited."[1] The class consisted of Detroit natives Chris Webber and Jalen Rose, Chicago native Juwan Howard, and Texas high school basketball stars Jimmy King and Ray Jackson.[2] At first, only three of the freshmen started for the 1991–92 Michigan Wolverines men's basketball team. Although they all played when the season opened on December 2, 1991 against the University of Detroit, they did not all play at the same time until December 7 against Eastern Michigan and did not start regularly until February 9, 1992. In that first game starting together as a regular unit, the five freshmen scored all the team's points against Notre Dame.[3][4] They started as a unit in all but one of the remaining games for the season.[5] They reached the 1992 and 1993 NCAA Men's Division I Basketball Championship games as both freshmen and sophomores, while starting a combined 304 of a possible 350 man-games
give me a break. It definitely isn't this year's Kentucky. What did they shoot, 44 percent from the field?
The question should be, who is the SECOND greatest college basketball program of all time?
Nothing compares to the Wooden UCLA Bruins.
There have been 7 NCAA men's championship teams that had perfect seasons, including a back-to-back performance by Bill Walton and the UCLA Bruins in the 1971-72 and 1972-73 seasons. As difficult as it is for a Tar Heel fan to admit, either one of those two teams or the 1976 Indiana Hoosiers is the best ever.
Mens: Texas Western's (now UTEP) 1966 championship run after beating Kentucky. Even though they have only 1 title, that team heavily impacted the NCAA by making history! Watch Glory Road; it's an awesome movie.
Womens: 2008 Tennessee Lady Vols. Candace Parker becoming first women to dunk in NCAA Womens tourney during the 1st round against Army.
I have a few options to go with here. I'm only 30 so I haven't witnessed the UCLA Wooden era dynasty, but here are my top teams: 1989-90 UNLV, 1995-96 Kentucky, 1991-92 Duke, 2008-09 North Carolina, 1975-76 Indiana Hoosiers, and now recently, the 2011-12 Kentucky Wildcats (it's pretty undeniable that they are the best shot blocking team ever.) I have to say that the 1989-90 UNLV team is all-around the most talented, defensive and offensive balanced team I've seen. It would definitely be interesting to see the Hoosiers experience take them on or the shot blocking, ridiculously raw talent of the 2011-12 Kentucky team go against them, as well as the 9 to-be professionals of the 1995-96 Kentucky team, but my god, the 89-90 UNLV team absolutely DEMOLISHED a terrific Duke team in the final by 30 points and before that, they beat argueably one of the greatest teams ever in Loyola Marymount 131-101 in the regional final (sans Hank Gathers of course.) And after the loss to Shaquille O'Neal's wonderful LSU team on Jan. 27, they simply dominated virtually every opponent and ran them completely out of the gym. The last analysis I will go into will be what I consider the most dangerous opponent that UNLV could have faced in the 08-09 Tar Heels. Hansbrough was a complete force of competitive nature underneath that could hit a mid-range jumper. Ty Lawson is one of the most unstoppable point guards in history, and Wayne Ellington's prowess from the arc was a combination that just devoured every opponent they faced in that tournament. They absolutely crushed everyone they faced in that run averaging a 20 ppg margin of victory while beating the likes of Blake Griffin's stout OU team and Michigan State's uber-tough squad. Therefore, all of that said, I believe that the transition game and the amoeba defense would've given the Tar Heels problems and I believe it would have come down to an outside battle of Anderson Hunt versus Wayne Ellington! From top to bottom, the starting 5, no one was better than that UNLV team.
The 1990 UNLV Runnin Rebel basketball team was for its era the best team to play the game. Known as the bad boys of the hardwood, they took it to Duke that year beating them in the NCAA championship title game by 30 points. That's right...It was Duke. 22 years ago the Rebs broke the record for the biggest margin of victory in a title game with that difference...A record that still remains today. Starting the 91 season the Rebels came out ranked preseason #1 and finished undefeated the regular season, won their conference tournament and made it back to the final 4 before finally losing to Duke never losing that #1 ranking all year. Its a great story for one of the greatest teams that ever played the game of basketball. Even fans on the east coast couldn't wait to don the Rebel clothing. If you are old enough you, remember the 1990 Runnin Rebels
The Kentucky Wildcats is the greatest college basketball team.
Suffolk County Community College in Long Island NY
Whatever team will go 32-0 and win the championship will be the best team in history of NCAA Basketball, but for right now I would actually have to say the Kentucky team the way it is right now, but next year it very well could be different!
2004-2005 Illinois Fighting Illini
Dee Brown, Luther Head, Deron Williams, James Augustine. I remember all those guys! And I don't care if they came close to winning the title because they completely dominated just about every team they faced! But the game that always sticks in my mind was the comeback against Arizona in the Elite Eight. They came back in the final minutes of the game and won 90-89 in OT. One of my favorite basketball games of all time!
