Responsible historians say that de Soto never saw the Hot Springs area. The main support of this is that the Hot Springs were never mentioned, or alluded to, even ONCE in the voluminous journals kept by de Soto and his men!!! So, we need to put that legend to rest. If you had even been to Hot Springs (I have), you would have seen that it is in the middle of thousands of square miles of Arkansas Ozark mountains, and the ENTIRE natural hot springs area is no more than a block in length, and the width is about 50 yards. Yes, some of the Indian tribes in that area knew of the Hot Springs (a wonderful and magical place to visit in the winter), but there is no chance that they would want to tell the evil Conquistadors of this treasure. AND, even if de Soto had heard about them someway, do you think he would have taken his expedition at least 300 miles from his original route through rugged Ozark mountains, on the word of a few Indians? Probably not.
So, the answer to the question, is that French explorers Father Marquette and Jolliet were the first Europeans to see the Hot Springs (and carefully document it in their journals), in 1673. This was 132 years AFTER De Soto..
Make sure you take the mineral baths and get a massage at the Buckstaff. Go early in the day, like when they first open, or the lines back up. It is really cheap for what you get. Also, tour the Bathhouse museum in the old Fordyce Bath House. If you like old hotels, the Park Hotel has been renovated. I really liked it.
