I had a sofa delivered to my house and the driver hit a street sign when he left. Their customer service suggested the township might hold me responsible since it was my delivery. That's absurd right? His entire truck was on a public road, he never entered my driveway. I think they just don't want me to call the township because the driver never reported it. I don't want to get him in trouble but it's been almost a month and there's no way I'm the only person who saw it. He had to know it would be reported by someone.

Considering you've let a month pass without reporting it, any report you do make will likely be ignored.
If the township decides to repair the sign, it will come from their budget, which is funded through by your tax dollars.
Since you are not wanting to hold him responsible, then you ARE responsible for it.
If you are so concerned about it you should pay.
That would be correct. Look up bailment in the law book. Since they were being paid by you to perform a service, they are responsible for the service and the way it is done. A more clear example is taking you car to a mechanic to have it worked on. While in the possession of the mechanic, the car was stolen. The mechanic is responsible for the loss of the car, not you. Which is one reason you always want to deal with people who have insurance to cover this. It is a lot easier to get your money from his insurance instead of his check book. In the case of the sign and the city, the city really doesn't care. Report the sign as damaged, tell your story. They will eventually get a replacement sign and put it up. The state actually has a sign making shop to make signs and there is a process. It happens all too often for anyone to be concerned about it. You will never know what happened.
The driver is responsible for damages caused by him, report it to the township.
No one is going to hold you responsible. That's absurd. Has the city replaced the sign? This kind of thing happens all the time. Most cities just replace the sign and don't worry about who was responsible.
If you're a liberal, you don't have to pay anything.
