Methane is released when the rising temperatures caused by carbon dioxide melt permafrost. Methane is a more potent greenhouse gas (higher rise in temperature) but its levels will still remain low. You have to look at how long the molecules will last in the atmosphere. I believe CFC's and to a lesser extent methane are the worst.
