I don't wish everyone a Merry Christmas, because I do not assume they are all Christian, you closed minded twit. I send out Happy Holidays on my cards, because I'm not Christian and my friends come from different faiths, or no faith at all. That does not prevent them from celebrating the season of light and giving, nor does it prevent me from showing respect to their celebrations. I'd be a sorry sack of refuse indeed If I only wished people of my same faith happiness.

Actually, it's probably the "season to be jolly" -- "Deck the Halls" is a Yule/New Year's ditty with absolutely no religious reference, so there's not much in the lyrics that people can get upset about (unless they have a problem with "don we now our you-know-what apparel", forgetting that there's more than one definition of the word ...)

Usually when thoughtless but well meaning strangers simply wish to convey their enjoyment of their upcoming holiday by wishing me a Merry Christmas, I simply reciprocate because they're also seeking group validation and a friendly response in kind. It doesn't hurt me to wish them to enjoy their holiday. I don't feel obligated to instruct them in the finer social graces as it is not my place to do so. Here, I'll make an exception.

When people start acting like ill mannered boors as YOU are doing here..I think I'll simply try to illustrate to them how rude it is, by responding with one of the following:

"Happy Mithras"

"Thinking of crucifying any more Jews to celebrate this year"

"Happy Kwanza!" ( only if they're very white )and when they reply..I don't celebrate that..I can say..I don't either..but you wished me to have a merry christmas so I thought I'd add another holiday I don't celebrate into the mix !

I once tried the "Happy Hanukkah" response since it was Hanukkah and I thought it might be a polite way to let the person know Christmas isn't something important to me, and that ended up in the following true exchange at a local outlet of a major chain:

Clerk: Merry CHRISTmas ( emphasis strongly on Christ) He IS the reason for the season you know! Too many want to take the CHRIST out of Christmas.

me: Happy Hanukkah!

clerk: OH you're Jewish, are you a Jewish believer?

me: yes, I'm Jewish.

clerk: Have you always been a believer? Some Jews don't believe in Jesus you know.

me: I am a Jewish believer, a person of the Jewish faith in God. you asked if I was a Jewish believer..meaning a Jew who believes in Judaism. I don't believe in Jesus.

clerk: Oh NO, that's not what a believer is! A BELIEVER can only be one who accepts Jesus. I know a LOT of Jews who believe in Jesus ( this said in a community with less than 200 Jewish people out of 100,000)

me: a Jewish believer is a believer in Judaism. a Christian believer is one who believes in Christianity and in Jesus. I need to go please finish checking my merchandise.( she had stopped and was now starting to lecture me about messianic Judaism with a line of people behind me)

clerk: You don't have to get UGLY about it..ALL I said was Merry Christmas!

..see what kind of MESS this can lead to..and all you're trying to do is collect your change and get out of the dang STORE!

I also hate the term "politically correct"..when it is simple manners and courtesy that we're talking about here. It reminds me of the playground bully who tries to taunt the children who don't act out in disrespect to his peers by calling them " goody two shoes" or other such taunts.

I don't go around wishing everyone a Happy Hanukkah in person because I don't assume that every other person I meet must share my beliefs. Ahthough I will wish a Happy Hanukkah to everyone Here today. My reason is twofold; it is currently Hanukkah and Hanukkah is a celebration of a victory over religious persecution. If you're free to worship as you see fit..you can honor the spirit of the festival of lights in your gratitude! It is a time of joy that we often share with our non-Jewish friends

However, If I were Santa..I'd be inclined to leave a lump of coal in your stocking until you stop being so pissy with everyone who doesn't celebrate Christmas.

EDIT>>I also want to share another response I have been known to give if when I am purchasing a nice present for my son in December..a clerk gets a little too pushy about asking how prepared I am to celebrate Christmas or gushes on about, "Oh, I bet your son will love this for Christmas!" I have been known to reply. The only Jewish child's birth I celebrate in December is my son's. :)

I hope the readers here are capable of seeing my tongue in cheek when I gave 3 possible responses to rudeness. I don't believe that it would be right for me to behave in the same level of disrespect as I may be treated even though I don't feel obligated to treat rudeness with respect.

Or a more southern and blunt way of putting it, If someone drops their drawers to show me their a**..I'm not going to drop mine back at them.
