Contributing to God's work doesn't have to be money. In this verse some of them brought gold and silver and some brought yarn or building materials. Giving of our time is also included in contributing to God's work. So contributing to God's work can be done any place any time, whenever God gives the opportunity I decide whether I contribute then or not. I wish I could say I always do but sometimes I choose to follow my own agenda.
We sold/gave away 2/3 of all we owned, stored 1/3, gave away all of our pets, sold our house, and took 3 suit cases each to East Timor, for the Lord's work. We had no fear, and felt safe and blessed in the hollow of God's hand. Each step there was orchestrated in a symphony to Him, and by Him.
It was not hard, and I blessed God daily for the red beans and rice that was our baily bread. Taught cleanliness, and proper food prep and anti-"Bug" (trichinosis, worms, ect)
My Blessing: Lost 20 pounds. Got a decent tan, learned to think of rain in a decent way, got some life time friends.
Sounds like your are a preacher who is trying to is trying figure out how to wring more money out of your parishoners. What's the matter? The Beemer getting old? Or has your mistress laid down the law about that fur coat you promised?
i try to set aside some money based on my income. this pays for our building upkeep, gas, electric and other services. we do not tithe as Jehovah's Witnesses. we give what we like and impel to give. i devoted much of my time and energy in the ministry. it feels good to use your time, energy and resources in Jehovah's work
it would be too long to explain and its very personal. I usually give to charities instead cuz my church is rich. We have 3000 members. Many are lawyers, doctors, bankers etc.

It's never hard to give to God. Because in giving, you receive your blessings.

I would never give money to a religious organization. They would just use it to ruin more lives.
