Why is everyone so happy about New Years when we’re still dealing with the same old problems (poverty, racism, war, ect.), what’s so new about things we’ve been dealing with since the beginning of man?

You sound like a 'glass half-empty' type of person.
It's about hope for the future. Without that hope, things will not ever get any better... and you have to admit that the human race has come a long way in recent centuries, although of course we're not 'there' yet.
Why do you ask? Wouldn't it be better to crawl into a hole and just forget about the world. Nothing changes. Everything is ca-ca.
We like to celebrate the coming of the New Year because we are optimist. We think there may be a chance to overcome some of those old problems.
Everything may be caca but it's our caca! And we think, given another year, we may be able to get our caca together this time.
Nothing...you're right. We're still dealing with the exact same thing, except we changed a number on our calender. Although, it might possibly give people hope, which I suppose is a good thing. So that's the great thing. People get to hope that things get better. Whether they do get better or not, I guess that's the point.
