I have never been a fan, as I live in Toronto ON have Second Cup, Timothy's, Country Style and others I can choose, not a fan of any of there products, with regards to your question, it is sheer volume and number of outlets, I have been t the original one in Hamilton ON, have a friend who managed it for 10 yrs, and is personal friends with Ron Joyce.
Now that it is American owned again, its just another fast food joint. What made it special to many Canadians is gone. Especially since it was acquired just as part of a tax dodge by the Brazilians that own Burger King. It is just another corporate player. Their doughnuts are shipped in from elsewhere and really their coffee is nothing special.
The food and coffer are still OK but that it all they are. Just OK. I will get a fancy coffee from them myself now and then but will not go out of my way to go there. As for their service, they are very slow. The drive through lanes are incredibly slow and the lineups this causes are a major source of excess CO2 in the air from the amount of fuel wasted. Even inside, I have waited up to 10 minutes just to get my order taken when I finally do reach the cash register. The staff all seem to be too busy to actually take my order. Hence they get awful lineups.
I only go to one if I happen to be going by. I will not go out of my way to go to one.

The big lineup of locals in the drive thru. Any regular Tims drinker learned early that its quicker to go inside
