Mediocre. The guy spent like 13 years writing the damn thing, fired the entire lineup twice, and blew a ton of his own money on it. for that kind of hype, the album basically had to be another Sgt Pepper's or Exile on Main Street or Led Zeppelin 4; not just merely good, but landmark in rock history good. Needless to say, Axl failed miserably. The album should have been called "Mindless Self Indulgence". Tracks like "If The World" just sounded completely out of place with the GnR oeuvre. Others, like "Better" or "Chinese Democracy" were attempts to capture the old fire, but after 20+ years and none of the original members (axl excepted), it just wasn't clicking. Then, there's "Sorry", Axl's personal ****-you to the various people he fired during the making of this album. It's really cheesy, and it's clearly just Axl indulging himself and justifying his singlehanded destruction of one of the great bands of the late '80s/early '90s.
AND that Dr. Pepper promotion didn't work, and I didn't get my free soda. Basically, Axl should just throw in the towel now, he's waaaaaaaaaaaaay over the hill.
It's not a Guns N' Roses album, it's an insult to their name. It's starting to grow on me but i will never consider it to be GN'R, it's Axl Rose and a few mates
It was just plain boring. I listened to it through youtube and I would never even waste the space on my computer to download it. I really don't know how I got through it. I needed to go listen to "Civil War" and "My Michelle" after just to remind myself that Axl was good at one point.
I didn't like it at all. I don't understand how they wasted millions on that album. I just don't get it. I agree with Adam, it was just plain boring. I think they played it too safe. I was expecting something better, surprisingly.
all that is good is good but does axl him to change his voice but there is no doubt that the seventies eighties and nineties were fantastic to me I would have liked to live them but good long live the rock and metal

Horribly over-produced. Does not have the true Guns and Roses feel to it.
Should have been called "Axl and friends"

Absolutely laughable, really its not even guns n roses!
Just a pitiful attempt to get a really awful album some more advertisement.
But then again when was Axl Rose ever going to release a great album on his own?

For an album that took 13 years to make, its pretty crappy
I would call it Rob Zombie Lite.
otherwise known as Poop on a Stick.
