hi I just learn this last week
cual use when you have choice but you not use cual before a noun.
Cuál es tu color favorito?
que use for definition and explanation
que use before the noun have the same mean as cual.
both que and cual with accent mark for question

Cual means Which and Que means That
peace
Qué: used when asking for a definition or explanation
- ¿Qué es el amor? [asking ffor a definition]
- ¿Qué necesitan los inmigrantes? [asking for an explanation]
Cuál or Cuáles: used when there's a possibility of choice in the answer.
-¿Cuál es tu profesión? [possibility of choice in the answer]
-¿ Cuál es tu número de teléfono?
-¿ Cuál prefieres, este celular verde o el rojo?
NOTE:
¿Qué...? may also be used when there's a choice in which, unlike ¿cuál...?, the items don't belong to the same group.
- ¿Qué prefieres, leer o ir a caminar?
whenever you can replace what by which, the translation will probably be cual
GO to Yahoo education, there you can see a dictionary spanish to english or english to spanish. Also, explain.
Cual means "which" not "what"
¿Qué gato?
What cat? (i.e. you have a cat?)
¿Cuál gato?
Which cat? (i.e. of the several cats you have, which one are you looking for?)
the examples explain it.
