what is the answer for H2SO4 + Mg(OH)2 → ( )
it's asking to complete it and then balance
please tell me how do you know and why?
One of the simplest reactions learnt in chemistry is
ACID + BASE = SALT + WATER
The acid H2SO4 is neutralizing the base Mg(OH)2 here.
H2SO4 + Mg(OH)2 → MgSO4 + 2 H2O
Your teacher should be teaching you these basic general equations like this! Others include
ACID + METAL = SALT + HYDROGEN
ACID + CARBONATE = SALT + WATER + CARBON DIOXIDE
acid + base is a displacement reaction, displace H by Mg
H2SO4+ Mg(OH)2 -> MgSO4 + 2H2O
this is a neutralization reaction as it is a reaction between an acid and a base.
H2SO4 + Mg(OH)2 → MgSO4 + 2H20
You asking why?
Try check ion form for each component
from H2SO4
consist of
2 H+ and 1 SO42-
from Mg(OH)2
1 Mg2+ and 2 OH-
Then, react both component by mixing positive with negative charge
we take 2 H+ (from H2SO4) react with 2 OH- (from Mg(OH)2)
Q: why i take hydrogen ion H+ and react it with OH- ?
A: as i said positive react with negative from other molecule.
so, 2 hydrogen ion react with 2 hydroxide ion you will get 2 water molecule.
Same thing for MgSO4
Blue.
MgSO4 + H2O
