Family "crests" actually do not exist, except in Poland. If you actually have a coat of arms, it takes a lot of research to prove it! Where you will do it depends on what country your ancestors come from.
The LDS Family History webpages are excellent resources for family history, and are free. Ancestry.com is another excellent resource, but, it costs money.
