It still would come out of the taxpayers pockets. Where do you think the money they make in prison come from? And in order for them to make enough to pay all this, they would need to get a very large pay raise.
It would make sense to have them work in prison so they could learn a trade and help pay for some of the cost of running the facility. I think they do this in some states. I don't know if they are paid wages. I think that if it were widescale people would complain that it took away jobs from law abiding people. To do it after prison would make it even more difficult for them than it already is and would lead to further convictions.
They can do jobs in jail, but it normally pays like dime an hour. While paying their own way would maybe help a little bit (remember they earn like equal to a pack of cigs a week). But the problem i have is that they are working for sub going rates in general. Sure it allows them to get out and help society, but people are worried that we are giving jobs away to immigrants when we give away a bunch of jobs to inmates.
edit: the guy above me makes a very good point... but what is even more insane, is it costs more to put someone to death (like capital punishment) than it does to have them in jail for 80 years.
Who wouldn't hire an inmate that they have to pay 1 buck an hour instead of 10 bucks to a regular employee.
Are you kidding me? Prisons hold some of the worst of society. Prison can be battleground where you fight or be killed. My husband is a career Marine. His brother was sent to prison for half his life for killing a complete stranger because he got mad one night out. My husband avoids his brother at all costs. You tend to avoid fighting those who show they have no problem killing complete strangers. Just because you are trained to fight (Marines and UFC fighters) it doesn't mean they can hold their own against someone who has no issue shanking a man who looked at them wrong. You underestimate humans.

I feel this is a good message to send to the inmates, and potential inmates. It also offsets the cost for the facility, and tax payers.
bring back the chain gangs.. our local county inmate do a lot of work here for towns villages etc...
their 'wages' aren't ****.
did you know it usually costs more to send someone to prison than it would if they sent them to college instead?
