Lincoln divided the country because the Abolitionists became more powerful and emboldened causing the South to suspect that Lincoln would remove slavery by force, ruining their agrarian economy ( a self-fulfilling prophecy). Lincoln's election was the last straw for the South and secession began even before he was sworn in.
