I believe it is the Japanese symbol for Yen, or their currency. I simply did a Google search, but I've dealt with it in various games. For example, Perfect World, an MMORPG, had used it in their item mall (a place to buy in game things with real money).
On another note, users don't always use characters/symbols for what they stand for. For example :-) stands for a smiling face. It could have represented a peace sign, or who knows what.
