The reason for the focus on Syria and Palestine would be because of the conclusion on the behalf of the crusaders that the Byzantium emperors was supporting the Muslims against them. The Byzantium kingdom was also seen as “an obstacle to the successful recovery of Jerusalem,” (pg 283). Out of the Seljuk Turks, Fatimids, Byzantines, the Jewish people and the Frankish crusaders, the crusaders claims are the least legitimate. This is because all 3 universal religions stem from one another, so for any religion to come into and cry to have singular claims to the land is wrong.
