I am not Jewish but I went to a shul for a service as a guest since my friends were Jewish so I didn’t wear a yamaka and a rabbi forced me to wear a yamaka out of respect. I told him I am not Jewish and that I don’t wear one. He still touched my head and put the yamaka on my head making me wear one or else I would have to leave the shul!
Was he right by making me wear a yamaka? Why doesn’t he just let me make my own decision?!

You go McDee's "No Shoes, No Shirt - No Service"
In other places, you may be required to wear a jacket or tie or both.
Same basic idea.
Its not about your faith.
Its about decorum of the place.
Was it really such an imposition?
It is presumably his position that in the sanctaury, a man regardless of his personal faith needs to have his head covered out of basic respect.
Much the way if you wanted to go a Mosque, they would ask you to take off your shoes.
(or any Japanese or Russian home for that matter)
