I gather you haven't been north, generally home to America's birth, best universities, best museums, best theater, best restaurants, best architecture, best salaries, best hospitals, best public transportation, and so on. Yeah, parts of the south are getting more liberal, but it still has a way to go.
The South has always been backwards, it has always been a Republican stronghold. It was Democrats who abolished Jim Crow laws and the Democrat party was founded to abolish slavery. There was a switch in the 1960s that cannot be denied.
