The Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Bad represented God's right to determine what was good and bad for Adam and Eve. By disobeying Jehovah's command not to eat from the Tree, Adam and Eve not only took something that did not belong to them, but they defiantly chose to decide for themselves what was right and wrong instead of leaving that up to their Creator.
The Tree of Life symbolised Jehovah's granting Adam and Eve everlasting life had they proved faithful under test. Since they failed the test, God did not allow them to eat from that tree. Instead, he expelled them from the Garden of Eden where they eventually died.
It was a test. Don't you get tested in school? Doesn't life test you? It's a test. I don't know if those trees were really there or not, but it kind a is similar to the myth of the Golden Apples that the gods were not supposed to let humans have. I think that fruit trees were a rich man's status symbol back in the day before the invention of the horse.
Adam and Eve could eat freely of any tree in the garden except the tree of the knowledge of good and evil.
Gen 2:16 And the LORD God commanded the man, saying, Of every tree of the garden thou mayest freely eat:
Gen 2:17 But of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, thou shalt not eat of it: for in the day that thou eatest thereof thou shalt surely die.
Eating of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil caused Adam and Eve's spirits to die, therefore God had to remove them from the garden lest they eat of the tree of life and live with their sin forever. Since their spirit died, their bodies would also die.
The purpose of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil was to give Adam and Eve the choice to obey or disobey. God gave all mankind free will.
