The tree was unable to bear fruit, or fulfill the measure of its creation. Christ showed 2 things. 1. His power over life and death, and 2. that if a thing doesn't give back what it is supposed to, then it is useless.
This also is about mankind. God washed away all of the beings except Noah & his wife, their three sons and their wives, and the animals. The clean animals were not limited to two.
He could, right now, end this world. But there are faithful living here, praising Him, anxious for His return, and so he waits until the time of fulfillment when Chirst comes with he legions of Angels and takes back the earth from Satan.
Mar 11:13 And seeing a fig tree afar off having leaves, he came, if haply he might find anything thereon: and when he came to it, he found nothing but leaves;
He was hoping for an early fig but there were not even buds. The tree was not going to produce fruit.
20In the morning, as they went along, they saw the fig tree withered from the roots. 21Peter remembered and said to Jesus, "Rabbi, look! The fig tree you cursed has withered!"
