Yes. The whole point of marriage in the beginning was for men to have rights over women and women to have no rights at all. Basically, marriage was female slavery. Nowadays, people in Western culture just get married out of habit. (They still do it the traditional way in which men literally own women in the Middle East, though.) If you're in love, you don't need a license from the government to make it official.
i don't agree with your theory. if a marriage is good and for the right reasons...there should be an equal give and take. now i realize this doesn't always happen. but most households today are multi income households. where both the husband and the wife are contributing to the bills. so in that respect her cleaning the house and him paying the bills wouldn't be prostitution.it would have to be a marriage of convienience. one where they are together simply for some sort of gain other than having a loving relationship. in that case i could say that that particular relationship could be classified as prostitution but you can't generalize all marriages as such.
No because there's no particularly good reason to do so. If you list divorce as a reason well there is such thing as prenupt that can help lessen the damage done by divorce. If the only reasons given for making marriage illegal are the reasons given by anon for example then it would be absolutely ridiculous to make marriage illegal as the whole "it used to be a way to enslave women" thing is a terrible reason. Also, marriage is a personal choice made by 2 people, whereas that isn't always the case with prostitution, as many prostitutes are FORCED into prostitution. Many people can easily say that since marriage is such a personal, lifestyle choice the government should have no say in it.
And back to prostitution, I believe that whether or not it should remain illegal is still under debate and I think it is legal in one state in the U.S.
Marriage has been accused of many crimes, but can be convicted only of suiting a host of lifestyles. History shows it can knot us into almost any social formation - nuclear, feudal, or pharaonic. The custom survived for millennia not by being dated but flexible. This elderly institution remains fresh because every couple strikes their own deal, so it's always personal.

Yeah because as Kalr Marx said, the capitalistic system has reduced the institution of marriage to mere money relations O_O
I think Prostitution should be legal strictly because "Her body, her choice."
Kind of Hypocritical that Abortion is Okay but Prostitution is not... -__- considering Abortion is not just affecting the mother...
As for marriage, I think you should remove all legal or financial ties that go with marriage. Seriously marriage is a contract to screw dudes over.
Anon - Oh great another hater of the "patriarchy."

Perhaps outlawing divorce might be the answer.
No. What if someone wanted to marry a whore?
