I’m 20, and looking into getting my first apartment by myself (I make enough before anyone brings that up). I won’t be taking any furniture from my parents house. Should I buy the basic furniture needed before I move in or should I get the apartment and then buy a few pieces here and there?

Buy a few pieces here and there. Sleep on an air mattress while shopping as it can take a long time. Furniture buying is 'time weighted moments of opportunity'. Did you know that furniture is the only thing that you will put into your apartment or home that will actually go up in value. (Except the kids) I was surprised too!
after your move
Wait... you don't want to buy furniture unless you know it will fit..
You can do either one--BUT--the best idea is to measure your rooms before you buy anything, so that if you decide to buy it ahead of time, you'll be certain it will all fit. Consider also how easy it will be to move into this apartment--you don't want to have to figure out how to get a sofa or dresser up several flights of stairs if they don't have an elevator.
Best plan: Take a chair or two with you, and figure out where you are planning to sleep--and on what--(futon, sofa, day bed, etc.) and then when you get there, order your furniture and have it delivered. And go easy on your bank account. Most people think they need a lot more than they really do.
Wait until you move in to buy furniture.
After you move - so you can take measurements and know what you have room for.
And so you have a place to put everything when you bring it home. Where would you put it if you buy it while you're still at your parent's house?
Are you buying or renting?
If you're renting - be aware that many flats come fully or semi-furnished, so you may not need to buy anything. Wait until you've confirmed where you're living and what you'll need before spending anything.
A few very basic pieces before you move in,others shortly after. Check out thrift stores.
Why would you buy furniture before you move? So you can pay to have it moved? If you can’t figure that out maybe you should stay at your parents house.
do some research. if you have a place lined up and a move in date, call furniture stores and see if you can have them delivered when you move in if you go that route. talk with the apartment management or landlord to make sure there aren't any issues with that.
if you plan on buying from ikea, other department stores, or even amazon, again look into if you can schedule delivery for when you move in.
if there is a period when the previous tenant is out before you move in, see if you can schedule delivery then. so they are there when you move in. call and ask people. get all the info you need.
