I was tired and so was the rest of the script staff. We work for Sunshine♥MattBaby's and she's a slave driver. We’d spent all day on the back lot of Paramount perfecting the final scene. This was to be the blockbuster hit of the century. We were into shooting for only 15 minutes before George Lucas hollered “rewrite”.

I looked at them, they looked at me. “ECHOS OF MY LIFE” yelled Sarge. “Every time they like the darn script and then rewrite, rewrite. I hate this business.

“ENOUGH ALREADY”, said Touche “We gotta do what we gotta do. After all who’s stupid enough to walk off a Lucas film production on the last day. Rewrite he wants rewrite he gets.”

“Any new ideas for the ending?” I asked.

“Well during the movie EVERY EVENING THE MEN RAN INTO THE BAR” spouted Nana 4 Da Kids, “maybe we can do something with that.”

We all looked at Nana knowing she was thinking of her weekly Gun Smoke script. She hadn't done that for years but oh the flash backs.

“I think EVERLASTING LOVE should have something to do with it.” said I Am so Happy.

(aside) I work with a bunch of people with Indian names. They aren’t much to look at but boy do they have writing talent. Then of course there is Silva....Nice sunglasses.

“It’s a cross between a death scene and a celebration but maybe we can fit everlasting love into it somehow, Maybe the dead looking down on the living, Pictures of eyes somehow, looking down upon the heros.” Said Silva “EYES ARE THE WINDOW OF THE SOUL”

Silva is a cute one and everyone respected her....thought process.

So we came up with this idea:

While at home on a rainy evening, I was reading "Echos of my Life" when it dawned on me! "Every person dies" alone unless the find "everlasting love". This made me jump up and yell, "enough already", the "eyes are the windows of the soul", use yours and see what is going on outside. That is when I noticed that "every evening the men ran to the bar".

Shipboard life, and the constant running battles, were getting to me. I was on edge, more than usual, as I patrolled my sector -- the most sunward sector. My threat board was clear. There was time to reflect.

Every evening, the men ran to the bar -- the men who weren't on duty. Wasn't much of a bar, since the only thing they served now was hooch distilled from fermenting mil-rations, and there was no escaping the metal bulkhead motif. They say the eyes are the window of the soul. Well, at the bar, there were a lot of empty eyes. They knew they would die any day now, and knowing that, you don't try to have a life. Every person dies alone.

I'm sure my eyes were empty too. Echoes of my life flickered through my mind. I remembered a summer and a girl... what I thought would be an everlasting love. Now, I didn't know if she were dead or alive. She wasn't aboard the ship.

The radio crackled to life. "Lieutenant Tamer! You're moving out of your sector!" Captain Hayes. Biddy.

"Enough already!" I cried. Good thing my mike wasn't live. I clicked it on. "Mako squadron, roger control, turning around, over and out" I said, then I muted the mike again. Mako squadron. Lieutenant. What a horrible joke. There was just me, and I'd been promoted only because everyone else in the wing had been killed.

It was 6:40pm and as always, every evening the men ran to the bar. I sat alone at the dinner table pondering the echos of my life. We were drifting apart. What happened to the promise of everlasting love? I stood and walked over to the window. I could see my reflection. My face distraught, I looked aged beyond my years. It is said that the eyes are the window of the soul. Enough already! I was going to put an end to this once and for all.

What the heck, every person dies alone.

The end.

Every evening, the men ran to the bar. Looking for everlasting love? I don't think they were, but some found it. When you look into someone's eyes, it is sometimes possible to find what you are looking for .. after all, the eyes are the windows to the soul. Finding that special soulmate to share one's life with is a universal search. After all, after the echoes of my life have died away,isn't it enough already that, when death comes, every person dies alone?

The Colonel was writing a book. It was called- Echoes of my life - a story of me, when suddenly his boss came in.

" Enough already, get back on the job , you know you only have 2 hours more!."

" Yes boss, he said with a rusty sounding voice.

The End!

Every evening the men ran to the bar. In their deepest thoughts, they knew they would not find everlasting love here. Even so, to have her turn her eyes on them, even for a brief moment, felt like heaven. So full of dreams.

She was proof that the eyes are the window of the soul. So deeply rich brown, those eyes could see the worth of any man with just a glance.

I watched from my corner table, placed just so. I could see them all, but they did not see me. They seemed like echoes of my life, wanting to have her for themselves, even for a few precious moments.

Enough already, I thought downing my beer in one gulp. I had had it all, it seemed like yesterday to me. The years had passed, but for me, the memory of her love remained as fresh as the day she first smiled at me. Back then of course, I was much too young, too proud of myself to understand how valuable and precious such a love really was.

It was my own pride that destroyed the best thing I had ever known. It was foolish pride which taught me the stark truth. Be cavalier with true love, and you will find life is lonely. Without it, every person dies alone. With it, we could live for ever.

I don't know if she even knew I kept coming back, just to see her one more time. And every time I did, I died just a little bit more inside. I could only hope that she was happy now. How could I have been so blind...

When you hit rock bottom, there's no place to go but up. That's what they said in the AA meetings. Unfortunately, they were right.

I met Andy one New Year's Eve in a bar. It was 1998 going on 1999. We hit it off right away. They say that the eyes are the windows of the soul. His were the deepest blue I had ever seen. One look and I was lost in them. As the night wore on we stopped dancing with other partners and the countdown to the new year approached. Prince was singing "...and we're gonna party like it's 1999!" Midnight came, balloons were released from the ceiling and the crowd went wild. We couldn't have cared less. That first kiss was magic. We were both smitten.

We married later that year. I saw trouble from the beginning, but I ignored the signs. Andy was a heavy drinker from the start, but as the years went by things went from bad to worse. When we would go out with friends it was always the same thing. Every evening the men ran to the bar while the women sat at the tables and visited. We all had our cocktails, but Andy and his buddies would get plastered. They kept going until someone would say "enough already!" Then the women would drive them home.

Before long, it was an issue of drinking during the day and the warnings and eventual loss of his job. Then it was non-stop drinking, starting early in the morning and going on until he blacked out at night. Andy looked gaunt and sallow. The doctor said, "his liver looks like Swiss cheese. Better get him into rehab. If he doesn't stop, I give him six months. Do it now. I'm serious."

Rehab was tough. Andy went into a deep depression. He talked a lot about endings and how futile life was. "What's the use, Cheryl?" he said to me one night. "Life's a b*tch and then you die. Everybody dies alone."

Somehow we got though those two months from hell. We got him home and started over. For a few weeks, things looked promising. Andy had found a new job and we were going to AA meetings. Then things started to unravel again. At first, it was the hidden bottles of vodka and the breath mints. Then it was the nighttime disappearances. One night Andy never came home. He was found the next day slumped in the front seat of our car in the parking lot of the bar we met in. In his own way, Andy had found a way to go home. When you hit rock bottom, there's no place to go but up.

Sometimes I think there are people who are just too fragile to stay in this confusing, angry world. I know now that is why Andy chose to drink. He was a kind and gentle man who used alcohol to blot out the pain of living. That is what I have to believe. I close my eyes and echoes of my life reverberate over and over in my ears. What if I had not let him go? What if he had stayed in rehab longer? What if? What if? I will never know. Some questions have no answers. But what I do know is this: your dying is not the end, Andy. Everlasting love will always keep you in my heart - and in my soul.

I sit at the dinner table, two candles lit, two places set, two glasses of champagne bubbling. The smell of fettucini permeates our small kitchen. As does the silence. I am alone but for the echos of my life.

Every evening the men ran to the bar from work. All of them except you. You ran to her. To her apartment. To eat her fettucini and to drink her champagne and to taste of her. This is how you defined our everlasting love.

I sat, riddled with anxiety, night after night, knowing but not knowing. Your setting at the table would remain untouched. Your side of the bed cold. Then you would come home, vague excuses on your lips. But your eyes. Eyes are the window of the soul. Eyes tell the truth.

In those empty hours, a person can do alot of thinking and reach a lot of conclusions. As I have done. Every person dies alone my sweet and you were no exception. Though I stood over you, gun in hand, believe me you were alone.

Enough Already.

I raise my glass and look at your empty shell lying sprawled across the floor.

To us, I toast.

And as the smell of bitter almonds engulfs me, as the cyanide embraces me, I give a sad and wistful smile.
