I tell you, I've been a wanderer all my life, but I never expected to find myself out beyond the orbit of Saturn. I was daydreaming about Earth again, the green hills of Earth, oh Earth, in my faithful heart is your memory enshrined, I don't mind admittin' my heart belongs to you.
A light shone in space for a moment, a starry night, a campfire light... nope, it was just Orange One adjusting his position with his rockets. He was the other loner. No one wanted to join Orange Squadron, because he whistled and he sang while sitting around waiting for something to happen. Now and then I could see distant lights going on and off, the other fighters adjusting position, merry dancers in the sky.
The radio buzzed. "Hey Mako Squadron," came the voice of Vanessa.
"Mako One here, where's Captain Hayes? Is she crying over spilt milk or something?"
"Hey! Don't you know cowgirls don't cry?" answered Vanessa. "She's got the other shift now. You're stuck with me, Lieutenant Tamer."
"Sing when you mention my name," I said. "Mako Squadron reporting all quiet, no sign of enemy activity. Status, fuel 93%, full charge all weapons, ammo 100%, full complement of missiles, it's all buena."
"Your patrol's over, Mako Squadron. Come on in," said Vanessa.
"Sure thing, young boss. Mako Squadron returning to base, over and out," I said.
I set the fighter back to "flight" configuration, and headed on in. It wasn't long before the mothership, the Alice, was looming in front of me, with the grappler array awaiting me, like the clasp of a welcoming hand.
On a starry night, beside a campfire light; my mind was envisioning the merry dancers in the sky when the loud winds howl and I began thinking. I've been a wanderer all of my life. Now I don't mind admittin' my heart belongs to you. I began to sing when you mention my name when the clasp of a welcoming hand startled me. He whistled and he sang, taking my thoughts in a different direction. In my faithful heart is you memory enshrined, however; you left me. Hey! Don't you know that cowgirls don't cry? Alas, this one did.
Yes I can!
