What do you mean,do you mean $3500 to go to trial? because my fiance is in the same position except hes looking for Joint Custody...
If its money for trial, see if you can get a lawyer who will take monthly payments
If its not for trial then im sorry you need to explain your question more clearly...

EDIT Mary C,$3500 is the cost to go to trial,my fiance found a lawyer who would do it for $3000 but his dad is a cop and know lawyers so we are looking around for someone better. It isn't an auction house but lawyers sure love to rape their clients when it comes down to trial...
I have no legal expertise so my answer is just what I see here.
What is the $3500.00 for? Is it 'Court Costs?' Is it a payment to the Mother to release custody? Is this what a lawyer is charging? Give us some more information!
I hate to say this, but you really need to have an attorney representing you. Perhaps you can get someone from "Legal Aid" if you don't have financial resources to get a lawyer on your own.
I have never heard of something like this -- a large amount of money to get custody of a child!?! I thought the Court awarded custody of the child to the better home! Is it an auction now?
"$3500...
Now $4000...
Now $4500... Going once; going twice;...
Sold for $4500!"
"$4500 to the Court and the winner takes the child!"
See if you can sell things you do not absolutely need. Borrow money from his family or yours. Get part time jobs. Find an attorney who practices family law who does not financially rape their clients. Maybe work out a set fee and a payment plan. Gaining full custody is in the hands of the judge, not a lawyer who promises he will do it for $3,500.00. So, any lawyer who promised you that is possibly just after the money because judges make the decisions, not the lawyers.
