Within an old and sleepy town, the children slept within their beds. Every fireplace was lined with shoes to dry, for the weather was quite soggy that winter. The whole town was sleeping. However, one boy sat on a doorstep and looked up into the sky. Really, i don't know what he was doing. Everyone was long asleep. Everything was closed, and the air bit the skin with a particularly sharp touch. Keld, for that was the name of this unfortunate boy, stuck outside on Christmas eve, looked at the sky, and wished he, too, had a family to go to, on this happy night. Instead, all he owned were the clothes on his back and a little picture book some stranger had forgotten in the park. Nevertheless, Keld held strong. Granted, he was an orphan, and noone really cared what happened to him, but someone _must_ want him, didn't they? Silently, he began to weep, and the tears rand down his frozen cheeks. Of course noone cared about him, how could they, he was just an orphan, a random stranger, a homeless beggar. Finally, his sobs quieted and he glansed up at the street once again. Oh! Red-caped and fur-hatted, a man walked down the street towards him. Interesting, wasn't this the same man in the picture book? Every child would know him, for it was Santa Clause, every child except for Keld, that is, poor, helpless Keld, who hadn't gotten a single present in all the 8 years of his life. Now the red man approached Keld and, though the boy shrunk back, Santa held out his hand, as if inviting Keld to join him on his voyage. Timidly, the young lad put his hand in the big one in front of him, and rising slowly, walked down the street, not even believing his luck any more; it wouldn't be until tomorrow that the young boy's frozen body would be found, asleep, on those self-same steps, it wouldn't be until tomorrow; for now, though, he walked hand in hand with santa claus, and for now, he was finally happy.
When everyone believed in Santa things were different. Every child would be sound asleep by midnight. They would dream of Santa and his reindeer and make up ways that he would go down the chimney. "He would just magically appear in the house" was the most popular because they thought that they would awake if he actually went down the chimney. Realizing that Santa had visited their home while they were sleeping was the most exciting thing a child could wrap their thoughts around. Every child awoke knowing it was Christmas. Every child knew that they would open something amazing. Krazy putty, bicycles, and rollerblades were opened in pure joy. In every home the shrieks of happiness bursted loudly. No child thought about giving. Giving seemed so far-fetched. Some children only thought of receiving. Only a couple worked hard through the year to pay back their parents on Christmas Day. For those few, Christmas was even more meaningful. Only those few where truly happy. Real happyiness came from giving, not getting. In thes few homes where the children gave, the parents were altogether better people. Even if the gift was horrible, if they had it already, or even if theyhated it they would act like it was te best gift that could have been given. Now everyoneknows that parents give and dont expect anything in return. Tell your parent that fro Christmas, your present from them will be th acceptance ofa gift.
