5 He wanted to create a background identity for a girl so she could get a Western passport and start a new life in the west. So the old woman was going to apply for her daughter to join her, and they'd use that paperwork
3. that was the truck-driver's mother I think, trying to get rid of Smiley. The vicar was the spymaster who looked after the agents, nothing to do with their age.
