Did you mention that you mistakenly took the item. It can happen to anyone who is in a hurry or is distracted. My sister in law and I were in a store once and she was in such a hurry that she didn't realized that she was still holding a pair of stockings in her hand as she was about to leave the store. Luckily I noticed and she was able to put it back before we left. Another time i left Petsmart with a book and didn't realize i had it until i reached the car. I took it back. Maybe you should consult a lawyer before going to court..
Whatever you paid to the shop is a civil matter and nothing to do with your criminal offence of theft. Probably they'll offer you an official caution as you admitted it, unless you have a record for this sort of thing. If so, you'll be cautioned formally by a senior officer and it will be noted in criminal records, but otherwise that will be an end to it.
