When I applied for a card with Kay jewelers I was denied because it says that I’m a delinquent. The only late bill I have is with sprint which I haven’t paid off yet, but how is this affecting credit that I don’t even have yet?

You are labeled as delinquent because you ARE delinquent, with Sprint. You did not pay your bill as you were supposed to and they reported you to the credit bureau. It does not take half a dozen bad reports to cause you to have a credit or bad credit. Each one is cumulative. One bad one is all it takes. The fact that you still have not paid Sprint what you owe means you probably cannot pay or you just refuse to. No store wants to be your next victim.
If you are 30 days late, it is reported as late and will stay on your report for 7 years. Even if you pay it off, it will stay on the repiorts with a zero balance
You have probably always been told that things like utility bills and phone service doesn't report to or help build a credit score for you. That is true.
HOWEVER, the minute you fail to pay one of these things, it becomes a collection account and THAT DOES get reported. So, all those things like electric, cable, and phone that you use as services and didn't help build a good score for you can destroy your credit rating if you fail to pay them.
Sprint reports to the credit agencies and Kay probably doesn't issue credit (well, the bank backing that credit) to anyone with any account in delinquent status...
if you have not paid the Sprint bill you are delinquent
Uh, bills you owe affect your credit rating. Credit scores are not just affected by credit cards. but by how you handle your finances.
Late means delinquent.
Because a "late bill" is delinquent.
And you do have a credit score.
And it's a bad one.
And you shouldn't have applied, because (1) you can't get a card with a store (except Victoria's Secret) if you apply when you have never had a credit card, and (2) applying makes your credit worse.
you are delinquent in paying off Sprint. everything you owe anyone is reflected in your credit score. late and non payments lowers your score.
If you are past due with Sprint, more than likely they reported the delinquent account to the credit bureaus(s) which gives you a bad credit report and score.
