I need some advice regarding Cherry Trees…?

I just moved into a house with a healthy mature tree in the front yard. Every indication is that it is a black cherry tree, including the cherry-like fruit on it. The problem is, I have never seen cherries like this. They do not in any way seem edible. They are the right shape, but they are light pink color, very hard and fibrous. Then they go from hard to squishy quickly. Is it possible this could not be a cherry tree? Is there another kind of tree with the same leaves and bark, but inedible fruit? Or perhaps is there something that needs to be done to the tree to get it to bear edible fruit? I love the thought of an edible fruit tree in my yard, but if it's not, that's fine, I'm just curious what kind of tree it is. Any advice or info will be appreciated.
