Is there a point to a Criminal Justice Degree if you don’t become a NYPD Officer?

As the questions states, is there any value in a Criminal Justice Bachelor’s Degree if you don’t become a police officer?

Living in New York, I already took the NYPD exam last year & did very well, have my waiting number and all & possibly expect to get called for the interviews around this time next year. (My record is clean I should state.) However, I am currently pursuing a degree in Criminal Justice but what if for whatever reason the NYPD disqualifies me as a candidate for whatever reason as I’m sure they flush out a lot of people as many people take the test.

My other option & second best thing would be to pursue a degree in Civil Engineering which I see as a more “safe” option. I have talked to plenty of fellow NYPD officers aswell & tell me to at least try to get a AS in Engineering for the meantime(also because the Academy teaches you everything you need to know about being a police officer, plus all you need is 60 credits not mattering towards what major they went towards) join NYPD & incase I don’t like it, just finish the final two years of Engineering & move on.

Should I risk pursuing Criminal Justice with the chance the NYPD doesnt hire me( it seems almost like I’m putting all my time & efforts into something that’s not garanteed)? Is there any value to a Criminal Justice Degree if someone fails to become a police Officer? Is pursuing Engineering the smarter & safer option?
