I think that the teachings of interconnectedness and interdependence would be of great value as well. If we were always mindful that we are interconnected to and interdependent on all other sentient beings, this world would be a much brighter place.
I would never try and convert someone to Buddhism, but I would encourage them to remember this as they go about practicing their own religion or belief system.

I would say yes definitely, but ofcourse I'm a bit biased :-P
Self indulgence and self-mortification are both extremes-- so, yes, there would be more balance and moderation.
