the choices were:my choices were: -40,-38,7
Could someone explain this to me, so I can do the rest? Thank you.
The first function is simple. Just input (-1) for x.
f(-1) = (-1)^2 + 1 = 1 + 1 = 2
The second one is basically the same, but this time input (-3) for x.
g(-3) = 3(-3) + 1 = -9 + 1 = -8
Finally...
f(-1) + 5(g(-3)) = 2 + 5(-8) = 2 + -40 = -38
Yay!
f(-1) means your x = -1 and it applies to the function named f. Therefore, f(-1) = 2.
5 * g(-3) = 5[ 3(-3) + 1] = 5[-8] = -40
So, f(-1) + 5g(-3) = 2 + (-40) = -38
First one is easy just replace x for -1.
f(-1) = (-1)^2 + 1
f(-1) = 1 + 1
f(-1) = 2
Second one is a little bit trickier and it's a little far off for me... sorry.
5g(-3) = -40
f(-1) + 5g(-3) = -38
