If her friend says that she likes you, then that means she does. If you ask the girl who supposedly likes you if she does - it's her natural reaction to say no. It's embarrassing if she doesn't know how you feel - for all she knows you may like another girl - and then you would know she has a crush on you and that you don't like her bad. That's not just embarrassing, that hurts.

By saying no, you save yourself all of that - but you also loose the chance of having a boyfriend - in case you do like her.

So long story short: she said no because she doesn't want to take the chance and find out that you don't like her back.
