You may miss the heck out of him but it doesn't change time passing. So much happens in 3 years and everything does look rosier in the past, compared to the present. If you were happily settled in a new relationship, it would never occur to you to be asking questions about a relationship from that long ago. You would already have realized how much people can change. Try to realize that now.
i'm in the same boat as you. i currently stuck on deployment and haven't seen my girl for almost 4 years. things have been shaky from time to time, but i do everything i can to talk with her and let her know whats going on in my life and ask about hers. do you guys at least communicate on some sort of timely basis. its not the same as being with the person, but its better than nothing at all. me and my girl email each, talk on the phone, send each other pictures, etc. and everything is still working out for us.
