If you don't have a workplace reference then you should try and get character references. Perhaps a college lecturer?

You can get character references from a teacher, a pastor, a friend of the family... people like that. Character references are very useful in helping you get your foot in the door of employment. Consider also doing some voluntary work. This will give you experience and access to someone who can vouch for you as a worker, albeit unpaid.
