viz., chubby guy who still insists on only trying to pick up that tall, thin, hot blonde with big boobs or average, not especially interesting girl who rejects other average men hoping that hot doctor who speaks six languages and owns three homes will soon approach her?

if the only goal is to get laid, everyone should be able to get laid.

at least some, but there are some very fine women that reward traits other than looks. the attempt should always be made, sometimes it is rewarded.
I think more of it is from putting too much in the "league" system. People forget to take into account personal tastes. People will often ask "Why is that dumpy looking guy with that bombshell?" or "Why is that guy who could have any girl he wants with that plain Jane". And of course, there's always the idea that not everyone is just out to get laid.
I don't know if I've ever played outside mine. I like my league, whatever it is.
